Pet Age Calculator — How Old Is Your Pet in Human Years?
A pet age calculator converts your animal's age into human years so you can understand its life stage and care needs at a glance. This hub brings together our free, vet-informed pet age tools in one place — pick your animal below and get an accurate human-equivalent age in seconds. The headline thing most people get wrong is the old "multiply by seven" rule: it's inaccurate for every species, because pets mature explosively in their first two years and then age at a steadier, species-specific pace. Dogs and cats also age differently from each other — a dog's aging speed depends heavily on its size, while cats age at a remarkably consistent rate regardless of breed. Each tool below uses the method appropriate to that animal, so the figure you get reflects real veterinary guidance rather than folklore. Every calculator runs entirely in your browser, needs no sign-up, and returns results instantly. They are educational estimates — your veterinarian remains the authority on your pet's health.
Choose Your Pet Age Calculator
Dog Age Calculator →
Converts dog years to human years using the size-based model recommended by the American Kennel Club. Because larger dogs age faster after their second birthday, the tool asks for your dog's size band — small, medium, large, or giant — and returns the human-equivalent age plus life stage. Use this if your pet is a dog of any breed or mix. Open the Dog Age Calculator.
Cat Age Calculator →
Converts cat years to human years using the model endorsed by the AAHA, AAFP, and International Cat Care. Since cats age consistently across breeds, there's no size selector — just enter your cat's age to get its human-equivalent age and life stage, from kitten to senior. Use this for any cat. Open the Cat Age Calculator.
How Pet Aging Works — and Why "Times 7" Is a Myth
Both dogs and cats follow a similar broad pattern: the first year of life is worth roughly 15 human years, the second year adds about nine more (bringing the total to around 24), and each year after that adds a smaller, species- and size-dependent amount. This front-loaded curve is why the "one pet year equals seven human years" rule fails so badly. It dramatically undercounts the rapid early years — a one-year-old dog or cat is closer to a 15-year-old human than a seven-year-old — and it ignores the differences between animals entirely.
The biggest divergence is between dogs and cats. After age two, a cat adds about four human-equivalent years annually, no matter its breed. A dog's rate, by contrast, depends on size: roughly four years per year for small breeds, rising to about seven for giant breeds, which age fastest and live shortest. That's why our tools handle each animal differently — applying a single cat curve but a size-adjusted dog curve — so the result matches the real biology rather than a one-size-fits-all shortcut.
Dog vs Cat Aging — Side by Side
The table below shows human-equivalent ages for the same calendar ages. Notice that cats and small dogs age almost identically, while large dogs pull steadily ahead — the practical reason size matters for dogs but not for cats.
| Pet's Age | Cat (any breed) | Dog — Small | Dog — Large |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 15 | 15 | 15 |
| 5 years | 36 | 36 | 42 |
| 7 years | 44 | 44 | 54 |
| 10 years | 56 | 56 | 72 |
| 15 years | 76 | 80 | 108 |
Note: Figures are educational estimates. Cat values use the AAHA/AAFP model; dog values use the AKC size-based model. For your pet's exact age, use the Dog Age Calculator or Cat Age Calculator.
Pet Life Stages — From Baby to Senior
Knowing your pet's human-equivalent age is most useful when you map it to a life stage, because that's what drives care decisions. Both dogs and cats move through broadly similar phases — a rapid-growing baby stage, an energetic young adult stage, a settled prime, and then mature and senior years — but the timing differs, especially for larger dogs.
- Baby (puppy / kitten): roughly the first year, packing in near-adult growth, vaccinations, socialisation, and neutering. Developmentally like human infancy through childhood.
- Young adult: from about one to two years — full-grown but still playful, the equivalent of the late teens and early twenties.
- Prime adult: the healthy middle years, typically ages three to six.
- Mature: around seven onward for most pets, earlier for large and giant dogs.
- Senior: cats and small dogs around 10, large and giant dogs as early as five to six. This is when vets recommend closer monitoring and more frequent check-ups.
Which Tool Should You Use?
If your pet is a dog
Use the Dog Age Calculator and select the size band that matches your dog's adult weight — small (under 20 lb), medium (21–50 lb), large (51–100 lb), or giant (over 100 lb). Size is the most important input for dogs; for a puppy, use the adult weight it will grow into, and for a mixed breed, pick the closest mature build.
If your pet is a cat
Use the Cat Age Calculator and simply enter the age — there's no size or breed step, because cats age uniformly. For kittens under two, switch to months for a closer estimate of those fast early years.
If you don't know your pet's age
Ask your veterinarian for an estimate based on teeth, coat, eyes, and physical condition, then enter that figure. Many adopters celebrate a "gotcha day" instead of a birthday and use a vet's estimate as the starting point.
